S
ALVADOR DALI

Salvador Dali was born on May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain, a small town in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains, approximately 16 miles from the French border. Dali's father encouraged the young Dali in his artistic interests, building him his own studio.

Most of Dali's early works centered around this beautiful section of Spain which is sometimes referred to as DaliLand [map]. From 1917 to 1927 Dali's works reflect his devotion to the area. He was recognized for his venture into cubism and had his first one man show in 1926. In 1928 he won international attention with his painting "The Basket of Bread."

The year 1929 was extremely meaningful to Dali. He fell in love at first sight with Gala Eluard. She became the greatest influence in Dali's life. During that year Dali joined the Paris Surrealist Group which called for "a more acceptable interpretation of the nature of reality."

Dali went on with his own interpretations of surrealism which were to bring him both recognition and disfavor. He and Gala also incurred the wrath of Dali's family with their wild ideas and "illicit relationship." Gala was still married to French poet Paul Eluard.

Dali's leadership of the surrealist movement was highlighted by his work "Persistence of Memory" which is still recognized as a milestone for Dali and the movement. He was expelled from the movement in 1934 because of his purported fascination with Adolph Hitler. He did, however, retreat from the threat of war.

He came to the United States in 1940 where he received many commissions and illustrated numerous books. He created a style of his own which brought him international fame and made him a leading artist of the 20th century. He and Gala did outrageous things together in the U.S. turning the art world topsy-turvy.

He returned to Spain and remained there, producing many works of genius. He even kept a diary which was published as "The Diary of a Genius." There were many wealthy collectors of his works which brought him and Gala fame and fortune.

He was always very close to Gala who was his chief muse, lover, business manager and partner all through his life. They were inseparable, and when she died in 1982 Dali literally fell apart. He was never the same again. His health began to fail, and he died on January 23, 1989 in the town of his birth.

Dali was a prolific artist of great talent. Many of his books have become collector's items as well as his artworks. His works are still sought by collectors around the world.
